The People's
Republic of China National Report on Sustainable Development

| According to
the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 190 of the 47th Session
in 1992 and Resolution 113 of the 50th UNGA Session in 1995, the Special
Session of the UN General Assembly on Environment and Development
will be held in 1997. The purpose of this conference is to examine
and evaluate the overall progress made by all Member States im implementing
Agenda 21 since the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development
(UNCED), held in 1992. For this improtant conference, the Government
of China has compiled this National Report, to review and summarise
progress from 1992 to 1996, on Sustainable Development in the People's
Republic of China. |

| China's environmental problems are part and parcel of the global
problems. China is keenly aware of its responsibility and role in
the protection of the earth's ecosystem. So it has attached importance

Programme for China's Agenda 21 (Revised Version)

The selection of priority projects for the Second International
High Level Round Table Conference on China's Agenda21 is predicated
on the following principles:
- Of the first tranche, those projects either in the process of
execution or negotiation are included;
- The contents of some selected projects is redesigned to meet
international standards, to justify the need for international
cooperation, to facilitate project execution and to attract more
industrial and commercial participants;
- In accordance with the principles of China's Agenda21, projects
are selected from over 300 new proposals by ministries, commissions
and local governments, after comprehensive expert appraisal.

on Local Sustainable Development in China
